the genes change from the original dominant trait which would be colorvision therefore making it the resessive trait of colorblindness

Genes in the retina (a light-sensitive tissue) can mutate causing people to perceived light differently in turn color than normal. Creating what is known as color blindness, the severely of the mutation can affect what colors they are able to see.
