A scale factor is a number which scales, or multiplies, some quantity. The ratio of any two corresponding lengths in two similar geometric figures is also called a scale factor.

Given a function
[tex]f(x)=\frac{3}{x}[/tex]
which is formed from the parent function
[tex]f(x)=\frac{1}{x}[/tex]

The function
[tex]f(x)=\frac{3}{x}[/tex]
was obtained from the parent function by multiplying the parent function by 3.

Therefore, the scale factor of the function
[tex]f(x)=\frac{3}{x}[/tex] is 3.
