What helped launch the industrial revolution

One of the aspects that helped launch the industrial revolution was the usage of coal for fuel: before, wood was used for this purpose. Coal was more abundant than wood, and required less energy to harvest than wood. During the Industrial revolution the recovery and usage of coal was developed.
