What was a benefit of the New England climate to the colonists when compared to Virginia?

The summers in New England were less hot than the summer in Virginia, so more of their crops would grow and less of them would be killed by the heat. Virginia is a southern state, or colony at the time, and the Colonists, coming from cool and stormy England, would have been unprepared for the sweltering heat.
