Simon suspects that the beast is not an animal or a ghost or any other outward manifestation but is instead the thing that a person can become if they stoop to the level of their enemy. in other words, they become the beast by fearing and reacting to the enemy in a way that is beneath the standards of the way they should be acting or reacting.
