What are the factors that caused the new world civilizations to be less technologically advanced than the old world?

One of the major factors was the availability of animals: the Old world had horses and other animals which were suitable for travel and carrying of goods, and contributed greatly to the technological advancement there. The new World also had horses, but they were extinct and we only know about them from archaeological excavations: so they couldn't be used by the more recent civilisations.
